King Abdulaziz University Hospital in Jeddah has successfully performed a delivery of a newborn baby, in stable condition, with large-sized benign tumor that exceeds the fetal cystic hygroma weight on the neck of the newborn and the mother.
A mother, in her mid thirties, was examined that the baby that she was carrying was diagnosed to have a large-sized benign tumor, cystic hygroma, which exceeds the fetal weight on the neck; and during her interview in the hospital she was found to have a history of stillborn baby. A plan was formulated and a team was organized to perform the operation and to ensure the safety of the mother and the baby.
On one Friday, the mother was rushed to the University Hospital Emergency Department of which the mother was swiftly admitted and transferred to the operating room where a team of physicians from Department of Anesthesia, Department of Ob-Gyne, Department of ORL, and Neonatal ICU were waiting.
Included in the team were: Dr. Khalid Darhouse - Physician, Department of Ob-Gyne; Dr. Rowayda Mohd Ali Mishiddi - Physician, Department of Ob-Gyne; Dr. Ibrahim Al-Khatib - Consultant for Pediatrics, Department of Anesthesia; Dr. Tarek Nasr - Consultant, Department of Anesthesia; Dr. Abeer Arab - Consultant for Pediatrics, Department of Anesthesia; Dr. Ahmed Abdel Basset - Physician; Dr. Saad AlSaedi, Consultant, Department of Pediatrics; Dr. Hala AlJariri - Consultant, Department of Pediatrics; Dr. Sarah bin Mahfouz - Consultant, Department of Pediatrics; Dr. Hana Marzouki - Consultant, Department of ORL; Nurse Peggy Mathew; Nurse Mathew Ronya; Nurse Philip Peňa; and Nurse Mae Banares.
With a team of highly trained individuals and modern healthcare technology, the team has successfully delivered her baby with congenital benign tumor. The team has plans to operate on the benign tumor of the baby by the time the baby’s condition has stabilized.
This is a rare case to happen in the Kingdom where the child was born to have a large benign tumor. Mortality rate of such case is very high. Thanks to the skilled University Hospital medical team, a baby’s life was saved.
