The emergency department was started in 1977 when the hospital was built as it has a major role for each hospital. At the beginning, it was a small emergency room to treat simple patient who were receiving their treatment at the hospital at that time. When the hospital moved to the new building the department expanded and became as separate department.

Emergency medicine is growing field that has a horizontal development focusing on patients care. It is different from other specialty where the development is mainly vertical. There are multiple new advances in emergency medicine like toxicology, occupational medicine, resuscitation and disaster medicine; which emergency medicine is a core in these fields.
The Custodian of the two holy mosques approved the establishment of the department in 2008 as an academic and clinical department at King Abdulaziz University.
The emergency physician has to be fast and focused as the patient could be presenting in different pictures or very unstable. The play major role as first line and resuscitation management of all patients
The majority of the doctors in emergency department carry a certificate in emergency medicine that qualify them to be a safe and efficient doctors to deal with the critical patients presenting to the emergency department
The emergency department manages patients with all complaints ranging from simple cut wound to unstable patient with major organ failure. The job description of Emergency physician to provide the initial stabilizing management and subsequently, refer to discharge the patient based on his condition.
The emergency department provides service to the whole community under the law of kingdom of Saudi Arabia.
In the department, we have total of 44 beds in addition to 3 chairs and a bed in triage area and 4 chairs for adult asthma and 3 chairs for pediatric asthma patients. In these beds, we have 6 trauma beds including the two resuscitation rooms. We have 6 beds for critical patients and 6 beds for less sick. 3 beds for screening and 4 beds as step down care.
There are 4 beds for Obstetrics and gynecology and 5 beds for pediatric patients. 2 operative rooms that could change to 4 usual beds if needed.
Education is a major part of our mission. The department has highly qualified doctors that teach and train residents, interns and medical students. We have many demonstrators who will be returning from their scholarships in the next few years and will be a great value to our department.
We are expecting to have major advances in the emergency department and planning to increase our bed capacity to 70 beds.
