Welcome to the Department of Emergency at King Abdul Aziz University Hospital.
The role of the emergency department was early recognized with the establishment of the hospital in 1977.
It started as emergency room in which the care of those who were in need of immediate attention was recognized.
Then when the new building was built and the numbers of patients who were in need of emergency attention grow
there was also a need for expansion and recognizing the emergency room as a department.
It has been approved by the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques, Prime Minister and Council of
Higher Education - to learn God - guidance wire Karim No. 10 209 / m b and the date of 30.12.1429 e
decision to the Higher Education Council in session (session) on 07.10.1429 e on the approval of the establishment
of the Emergency Department, Faculty of Medicine at King Abdul Aziz University.
The Emergency Medicine in its horizontal evolution provides the wide view of the patient care,
this differs from other traditional medical specialties where valuation is more vertical
or prompt specific system and diseases.
And, while we maintain the philosophy of the horizontal developments special interests of specific sections
have occurred such as: (Toxicology – environmental medicine – resuscitation - primary medical care -
emergency medical services (ambulance) - Disaster Management), and all this is through the Emergency Medicine
which takes the main role in these cases.
Today, Most of the emergency physicians are board certified in emergency medicine and most of the
nurses are quite experienced in dealing with the emergency cases. Specialist in emergency medicine must be
deep in specialization, where deep draws attention to the emergency medicine specialist in the assessment and
resuscitation of life-threatening conditions. The emergency medicine specialist treat cases of a wide range starting
from minor injuries to conditions complicated and inefficient as well as bruises, and uses every means possibl
e to assess the priority in the management (assistance, interfere, resuscitation) and methods of medical treatment,
and after the assessment of all cases, even up to the stage of the transfer of the patient, and skilled regulation
in the emergency department and the management of disasters, and plays the role of leader in the development
and organization of emergency medical services, and pre-admission to hospital, and provides medical education
to the trainees all at the stage of university training in the jurisdictional phase, and be in charge of continuing medical
education, research and the usefulness of traditional medicine and reflected
on all workers in the medical field and help them.
The emergency department accommodate around fifty beds (4 Screener, 6 clinic revealed: 4 works +
1 Doctors take a sit + room sort of the birth, 6 quick fix: (Bays), 6 treatment of critical, 2 isolation,
12 rooms detect medium-Care, 8 rooms injuries, 2 two operating rooms, Detect the eyes of a chair, Chair an ear,
nose and throat, 2 clinical hypnotherapy, wait for attention or medium).
Emergency laboratory and radiology sections were separated from the main laboratory and radiology department
for improvement of the turnaround time. The helicopter-landing zone is one of the few landing zones in the city of
Jeddah recognized for its ability to accommodate above average size helicopters.
Emergency department plays a vital role in the health care system by providing immediate service to a wide
variety of the community patients and considered a hospital access for those who are in need
of emergency or urgent management.
Education is a very essential and integrated element in the emergency department. Not only emergency medicine
rotating residents, but also residents from all different specialties finds emergency department a place of recognition
of different pathologies and the proper way of their management. Interns finds emergency department as one of
the few places in which they can learn most of the basics about the most common diseases.
The future of the emergency department is bright. We are now preparing the department for establishing
the residency program. As well we have demonstrators who are in scholarships for emergency medicine
residency programs. Those demonstrators will be back as assistant professors and assist in the educational process.
A new emergency department building is now under construction. It will accommodate around
seventy beds upon completion.
Currently the department is headed by His Excellency Prof. Faisal ibn Muhammad Almasha,
has been assigned so as of 12/27/1428 AH.
