The Operating Room Department was established in the temporary building in King Abdulaziz Hospital in the year 1978 with total number of 3 major surgeries room covering seven services. We moved to the current building in 1997 and the department consists of 25 operating rooms distributed as follows; 16 major operating theaters in the main OR; 2 operating theaters in the emergency department; 2 theaters in the labor delivery; 4 theaters for same day surgery; and 1 burn unit operating room.
The OR department is serving most of the surgical specialties including General Surgery, Neurosurgery, Cardiac Surgery, Thoracic Surgery, Ophthalmic, ENT/ ORL, Plastic, Pediatric, Vascular and Robotic Surgery. It covers services needed for the Pain Unit Service, Hematology, Oncology and Endoscopy Unit.
The OR Department is participating actively in the education process of the university with different faculties including medical school, dental school, nursing school and others. This participation is covering both under-graduate and post-graduate levels.
As well, the OR Department is contributing frequently in the workshops of different departments of the hospital and for this reason eight operating rooms were renovated to be digital rooms to keep in line with most advance technology for operating room in the world.
These digital operating rooms enable the surgical team to do and follow the surgeries electronically by enabling the broadcasting of the surgeries and facilitate communication between the surgeon and audience audio visually from anywhere inside or outside the hospital through a special secured access.
The OR department is looking forward for development of services provided to the hospital through adopting the most advance technology in the world for ensuring the patient safety and efficiency of providing services.
FACILITY
The Operating Room Department is located on the ground level, left wing near SICU, Emergency Department, and Radiology Department. The main OR has 16 operating theaters. All are equipped and fully operational. Eight (8) rooms are converted to digital operating theaters. It is accessible to vital support service departments such as CSSD, Laboratory and main supplies warehouse.
The Main OR is designed and equipped with most advance technology and facilities such as:
* Digital OR
* Robotic Surgery (da vinci Surgical System)
* Intrabeam
* Uroskope system for Urology Surgery
* Arthroscopic Tower for Orthopedic Surgery
* Brain Lab Navigator
* Neuro- microscopic
* Complex Spine Surgery System
* Laparoscopic Bariatric Surgery
* OR 7 & 8 equipped with ceiling mounted microscope
1 - Digital OR
Digital OR is an integrated operating room solution that utilizes digital and other technologies for the benefit of the patient, surgeon, OR staff, and the facility as a whole. The surgical team can optimize equipment, control multimedia and configure the room to the specific desires of a particular surgeon. It enables real-time video broadcasting of live surgery, audio and computer signals within the OR, inside the facility and around the world. Images and video are exported via Integration software and can be stored in a network folder thru the AIDA system. It helps maximize clinical focus and efficiency by providing the surgical team with centralized control of endoscopic, room light and other medical devices from multiple locations inside the operating room using touch panels of the AIDA System.
2 - Robotic Surgery
Is designed to facilitate complex surgery using a minimally invasive approach, and is controlled by a surgeon from a console.
The da Vinci System consists of a surgeon’s console that is typically in the same room as the patient, and a patient-side cart with interactive robotic arms controlled from the console. The arms are for tools that hold objects, and can also act as scalpels, scissors, bovies, or unipolar or bi, the surgeon must first use the system's weight to judge how hard it should work. Then he/she uses the console’s master controls to maneuver the patient-side cart’s robotic arms (depending on the model). The instruments’ jointed-wrist design exceeds the natural range of motion of the human hand; motion scaling and tremor reduction further interpret and refine the surgeon’s hand movements.
The da Vinci System has is being used Urology, Obs. & Gynae, Thoracic, Pediatric & General Surgery.
* Radical prostatectomy, pyeloplasty, cystectomy, nephrectomy and ureteral reimplantation
* Hysterectomy, myomectomy and sacrocolpopexy
* Hiatal hernia repair
* Spleen-sparing distal pancreatectomy, cholecystectomy, Nissen fundoplication, Heller myotomy, gastric bypass, donor nephrectomy, adrenalectomy, splenectomy and bowel resection
3 - Uroskope Access for Urology Surgery
UROSKOP Access System can provide a broader range of diagnostic and therapeutic examinations the patients. Its open interface allows attaching endoscopic modules or ultrasound systems and connecting video-urodynamic workstations. All examinations are performed with excellent image quality and without patient repositioning for a higher level of patient care:
* Radiographic examinations of the urogenital tract
* Transurethral interventions
* Percutaneous interventions
* Laparoscopy
* Urodynamics
* Ultrasound examinations
4 - Brain Lab Navigator for Neuro-microscopic Navigation Surgery
Neuronavigational systems enable surgeons to visualize the anatomy of a patient’s brain during surgery and precisely track the location of their surgical instruments in relation to the anatomy – even accommodating for the brain shift that occurs during surgery. Using these technologies during procedures like tumor resections, surgeons can navigate more precisely, perform less-invasive procedures, and help improve clinical outcomes.
It has a spinal module useful in the planning and execution of fusion instrumentation, such as transpedicular screw placing and plating.
5 - Arthrex Arthroscopic Tower
Has arthroscopic instrument sets with state of the art quality, durability, precise tactile feel and an extremely low profile tip. These features facilitate easier access to pathology in tight joint spaces with precision cutting edges and precision resection control. Use for all arthroscopic procedures (Shoulder , Knee and Foot & Ankles).
SERVICES PROVIDED
The operating room of King Abdulaziz University Hospital provides services for operative and other invasive procedure and immediate post operative care on a 24hour basis.
The patient population served by the operating room consists of the newborn, pediatric, adolescent, adult and geriatric patients requiring or seeking surgical intervention to maintain or restore optimum level of wellness.
