The department of Orthopaedic Surgery at King Abdulaziz University Hospital is a clinical unit offering orthopaedic care to the public and educational training to students as well as residents in Saudi Board of Orthopaedic Surgery.
Message
The department offers a wide range of services and practices in most of the Orthopedic Subspecialties for all age groups in the western region of Saudi Arabia. The department has qualified staff to provide a safe and quality care to its patients, as well as promote learning and education.
Vision
To be recognized as a leading tertiary care department that is capable of providing evidence based care in all Orthopaedic subspecialties, and to be recognized as a regional academic center for the orthopaedic training and education.
* To Improve outcome of surgical procedures through the process of continual evaluation.
* To develop Clinical Practice Guidelines (CPG) for the commonly performed procedures.
* Develop and implement intradepartmental policies and procedures (P&P).
* Establish fellowship training programs Arthroplasty and Sports Medicine by the end of 2013/2014 academic year.
* Recruit and train staff in various orthopaedic subspecialties with the ultimate goal of establishing clinical units for each subspecialty.
* Promote clinical research.
1. Days and Hours of Operation
1.1. Outpatient Specialty Clinics
Sunday – Thursday:
Morning session: 09:00 – 12:00
Afternoon session: 13:00 – 16:00
1.2. Inpatient services:
Four (4) teams, each led by two (2) orthopaedic consultants, a specialist (or a senior resident), a junior resident, and an intern, provide patient care for patients under each consultant starting 08:00 until 17:00 during weekdays. All critical patients and pending work is handed over to the on-call team for that day at 17:00. Weekend rounds are carried out by the on-call team. All critical care issues are handed over the weekend through direct communication between consultants and residents.
1.3. On Call Consultants:
24 hours/day, 7 days/week.
1.4. Surgical Procedures:
Elective cases start at 08:00 and are scheduled to be completed by 17:00. All emergency cases are prioritized after discussion with the anesthetist on-call and are placed on the emergency list to be performed at anytime of the day.

4.5. Ring Fixator Procedures:
Including correction of deformities, bone lengthening, segment transfer, treatment of extensive open fractures.
4.6. Spinal surgeries:
decompression and fusion, spinal deformity correction.
4.7. Sports Medicine:
Joint arthroscopies and ligament reconstructive surgeries.
4.8. Trauma Surgery:
Various simple and complex fractures including trauma to pelvic reconstructive surgery.
